Hello and welcome to this week’s harmonica lesson, where I will be introducing you to the major pentatonic scale. I will also be showing you some licks using it. This scale is a little different from the blues scale, which is based on the minor pentatonic scale. It can still be used to play some tasty blues though.
You will need a harmonica in the key of A, and we will be playing in 2nd position in the key of E major.

Happy harping and see you next Wednesday for the next lesson!
Very tasty licks!! Highlights the importance of the third hole half step bend which has been sadly lacking in my playing. Another great lesson!!
Hi Tomlin just want say your lessons and presentation are fantastic really leaning a lot thanks. Just one question I’ve be playing for a little while so I guess I’m an intermediate player and want to start getting up at jam nights but not sure or confident enough to just get up and play. As you know at an open mike night they play everything and anything so what’s the best way of jamming to music that is totally different to what I’ve been practising which sounds half reasonable. I’ve been working on improvising to backing tracks but seem to get stuck playing the same notes and repeating myself cheers Tony
The tab written across the bottom of the screen is too blurry to actually read this week. Good lesson for ear training…
Hi Joshua, I think you will need to click the quality button on the video to set it to HD, this will make the tabs clear 🙂
Hi Tony, Are you comfortable jamming over a 12 bar blues? If not I would start with that. Maybe try out this lesson – http://tomlinharmonicalessons.com/5-tips-for-improvising-on-harmonica/
Thanks William – I’m glad you enjoyed them 🙂
