The Best Harmonica To Start With

Jul 10, 2019 | Beginner Harmonica Lessons, Harmonica Gear

Hello and welcome to this week’s harmonica lesson. I get emails all the time time asking what the best harmonica to start with is. In this video I will tell you why I think every beginner should start with a Hohner Special 20. This isn’t necessarily the best harmonica out there but I do strongly recommend that beginners start with one.

You might think that buying a full set of cheap harmonicas or even buying one really expensive one is a better idea but it is not. The full set of cheap harmonicas will probably be leaky and difficult to play which will put you off playing. The really expensive harmonica will probably be so sensitive to your playing technique that it will be difficult to play and put you off playing also. This is why a standard Hohner Special 20 is the place to start – it’s a good quality but not super high-end instrument which is as easy to play as a harmonica can be.
