Lick 1 – Classic Call
Let’s kick things off with a solid blues phrase.
This lick starts with a clean two draw held for four beats—nice and steady. Then you go into a four draw, four blow, three draw half step bend. To round it out, you’ll finish with two quick two draws.
To make those two draws pop, I like to use articulation—breathe in while saying “du du” on one breath. It gives the lick a great rhythmic punch.
Play it slowly and focus on tone before speeding it up.
Lick 2 – Call and Response Style
This one’s a perfect intro to call and response phrasing.
You start with a two draw, another two draw, then a three draw half step bend. That’s the call. The response? Same lick again—but this time, you add those two “du du” two draws at the end for a proper bluesy feel.
It’s simple, but it teaches you a lot about phrasing and groove. And it sounds great over a 12-bar blues.
Lick 3 – Higher and Tighter
Time to move up a little on the harp.
This lick kicks off with a clean four draw—held for four beats. Then you roll into four draw, four draw, four blow, three draw half step bend, and finish with a clean two draw.
It’s got a tight, punchy feel and teaches you how to flow across different holes smoothly.
