Harmonica Workshop Plans For The Future

Why You Should Stop Googling “Harmonica Workshops Near Me” and Actually Show Up to One

Hello! This is Tomlin from Tomlin Harmonica Lessons—and today’s post is a bit different. I’m not giving you a technique to master or a lick to learn. Instead, I want to talk about something that can completely transform your harmonica journey: going to live events.

If you’ve ever typed harmonica workshops near me into a search bar, chances are you weren’t just looking for another class—you were looking for connection. Maybe even a bit of magic. And the truth is, you’re more likely to find it on stage, at a jam session, or in a room full of harmonica players than you are behind a screen.

Why In-Person Events Matter More Than You Think

I’ve just come off the back of running the Edinburgh Harmonica Workshop, and the experience really reminded me why these events are so important. Watching students take the stage for the first time—some with tears in their eyes after ticking off a lifelong goal—was just as powerful for me as it was for them.

I got to share the stage with brilliant players like Ronnie Shellist, Liam Ward, and Sang Kim. That’s a nerve-wracking experience, but it pushed me as a player—and I loved it.

You can’t replicate that kind of energy online. Videos and forums are brilliant, but nothing replaces the inspiration, camaraderie, and emotional charge you get from being in a room full of people who are all passionate about the same thing.

Why I’m Retiring the Big Format (And What’s Next)

Now, the Edinburgh workshop was amazing—but let me be real with you—it was a beast to organize. Six months of planning, logistics, international travel, accommodations, materials, and about a thousand moving parts. Before the event even started, I had decided it would be the last one of that size.

But after seeing how powerful it was… I knew I couldn’t stop running events altogether. I just had to find a way to keep doing it without burning out.

So I started thinking about three different workshop formats that could be sustainable for me—and still totally awesome for you.

Option 1: Small Group Weekend in Edinburgh

This would be a more intimate version of what I’ve done before. Just two teachers—myself and a guest—and around 30 students. We’d run it in a smaller venue in Edinburgh, and the smaller group size would mean more personal attention and face-to-face time for everyone.

Because it’s more compact, it’s easier to run—and I can keep the costs reasonable. It’s still a full weekend of learning, jamming, and hanging out with fellow harmonica nuts, just without the big overheads.

Option 2: A Five-Day Immersive Harmonica Retreat

This idea is inspired by Jon Gindick’s Jam Camp in the US. It would be a five-day residential workshop somewhere in Scotland—where you eat, sleep, breathe harmonica for nearly a week.

It would be all about deep immersion. Multiple instructors. Playing with a live band. Jamming. Late-night sessions. Structured lessons by day—good food and music at night. The kind of workshop that takes your playing to the next level and gives you memories for life.

This doesn’t exist in the UK yet—and I think we need it.

Option 3: A Workshop Tour Across North America

This one gets me especially excited. The idea is simple: I come to you.

One-day workshops in cities across the US and Canada. Each one includes a full day of teaching, plus a jam or performance in the evening. I’d team up with local harmonica teachers in each location and bring the energy of a full-on workshop to your backyard.

If you’ve ever searched for harmonica workshops near me and thought, “Shame there’s nothing local…”—this could be your chance.

I’ll need to sort out the paperwork (work visas and all that fun stuff), but I think it’s doable. And it’s a great way to connect with more of you in person, wherever you are.

What You Can Do Right Now

So, what do you think? Are you excited by one of these formats? I’d love to hear from you. I’ve set up a page where you can register your interest and let me know which kind of event you’d be keen on.

And whether or not you ever attend one of my workshops—please try to get to some live harmonica event. Go see a band. Sit in at a local jam. Even just meeting another harmonica player in real life can give you that fire to keep going.

Let’s Make the Real World Part of Your Practice

I’ll leave you with this: online learning is amazing—but it’s just one piece of the puzzle. The real world is where things really click. Where your confidence builds. Where your passion gets fuelled. And where you stop being “someone who’s learning harmonica” and start feeling like a musician.

So if you’re searching for harmonica workshops near me—maybe it’s time to stop searching and start showing up.

Click the link, let me know where you are, and we’ll figure out how to bring harmonica inspiration to you.

Take it easy—and happy harping.
